Tayeb Al Rais, Secretary-General of the foundation, said they distribute the same to minor children who are financially not stable, every Eid. “The Dh524,000 that was given away, included Dh356,000 as Eid bonus or gift which 1,779 minors benefited from, apart from Dh168,000 gifted as Eid clothing to 168 low-income minors.”

Al Rais added that the foundation distributed full Ramadan groceries and foodstuff it received from a philanthropist to ten poor families. “We also organised a mass Iftar banquet for some minors in the emirates of Dubai and RAK in collaboration with the Watani Programme.” Further, Ramadan saw other activities in the foundation. “We distributed nice gifts to some patients suffering from cancer, and digestive and kidney chronic diseases at the Dubai Hospital, in cooperation with the Early Learning Centre.”

The Awqaf and Minors Affairs Foundation, adopting a cultural programme during Ramadan, held a special lecture themed ‘How to receive Ramadan?’ for minors and their sponsors.

“We also ran a competition for minors to memorise some chapters from the Holy Quran, as well as ten Hadiths (sayings) of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). Some months back, the foundation launched a new service whereby the financial aids and zakat may be electronically transferred to beneficiaries through bank accounts.

“Therefore, minors and those eligible for zakat can collect their financial aid from the nearest ATM for more convenience and privacy.” The foundation is the only government department concerned with minors’ care and orphans in Dubai. “We start taking care of the orphans from the very moment of their fathers or mothers’ death to ensure them a better life.”

The foundation is also taking care of the orphans financially, socially and educationally, and provides them with proper accommodation, and medical care.

“We pay the due rents, take care of maintenance works if needed, encash a monthly financial aid, and distribute in-kind charity such as electric devices and furniture.”

Earlier, the foundation had done maintenance work at all Awqaf assets worth Dh2.35 million to provide sustainable endowments and maximise revenues. “We have run investments exceeding Dh778 million over the last seven years.” Talking to Khaleej Times, Al Rais said while the foundation’s Awqaf investments hit Dh778,324,566 from 2005 to 2007, the revenues grew from Dh68,931 in 2009 to Dh78,407 in 2012.

“Also our assets jumped from Dh1.130 billion in 2010 to Dh1.583 billion in 2012 - a Dh453 million increase.”

Al Rais added that the foundation generated operating revenues of about Dh162.74 million, up from Dh146 million in 2011. “In addition to registering Dh114.6 million in rental income from Awqaf assets awt the end of 2012, the foundation gained total revenue of Dh78.4 million from endowments.”

“Meanwhile, the expenses of allocated endowments accounts totaled close to Dh25 million, which is the equivalent to 97 per cent of the main foundation’s endowment accounts,” he added.
